Guardian of Light

Some paintings tell you what they are. Others wait patiently until life reveals their true name.

When I painted this piece, I believed I was creating something cosmic - a dream of colour, light and the mystery of the universe. I named it Moonstruck, never seeing anything more than that.

Weeks later, as it was being framed, my mum quietly asked, “Can you see the angel?”

I couldn’t.

Then someone else saw it.

And another.

Soon, visitors at Art Source began telling me they could see an angel emerging from the centre of the painting. Once I saw it, I could never unsee it.

So the painting waited.

A few weeks later, life changed in ways I could never have imagined. My sister was diagnosed with cancer and, after a heartbreakingly short battle, she passed away.

Grief has a way of arriving unexpectedly. Sometimes it comes in waves. Sometimes it catches you as you walk past a painting hanging quietly on your own wall.

Now, when I look at this piece, I no longer see only the cosmos.

I see hope.

I see love that never leaves us.

I see a guardian watching over those still finding their way.

Perhaps the angel was always there. I just wasn’t meant to see it until I needed to.

So Moonstruck became Guardian of Light.
